Source and Contraints

Source Map Label: Building Footprints: Corporate Services - Information Technology - GIS (Ortho Imagery - April 2003, building surveys and site plans 2002-current)
History: Co-op students were used during the summer and fall of 2000 to digitize from the 1997 Ortho Imagery, the building footprints for the entire City. The methodology for creating building footprints was base on the fact that all footprints must be drawn with square corners (90 degrees or right angle corners) where they appear to exist and are polygon shapes. The footprints are drawn at the base of the building where the longest visible wall and corner could be seen. The original classification of Building Types are single Detached Homes (including Detacted Garages), Townhouses, Apartments, Commercial/Industrial, Agricultural, and Semi Detached Homes. This classification is still in use and has not been verified by any other sources other than what it looked like on the Ortho and personal knowledge about the city. In January of 2001, builiding permit reports were used to from Amanda to update the existing data layer to add and remove any visible buildings from the updated April 2000 imagery. In September of 2002, GIS Assistant used digital or scanned drawings of Site Plans from Planning to add new building footprints. However, only multi-residential (> than 3 storeys), industrial and commercial building footprints have been added 2001 and 2002. All other building types are not required to have site plans. Buidling footprints were again reviewed and updated using the April 2003 Ortho Imagery.
Original Source: CS - Planning
Original Source Process:
Maintenance: Currently updated when new Ortho Imagery is flown which is every 3 year. Last updated April 2003. Building permits were used to determine building which had been demolished between April 2000 and April 2003. Site plans for residentail properties over 3 stories or all industrial/Commercial properties are added as they are recieved from Planning. Residential buildings are added using scans of Surveyor's Real Property Reports. A status of Pending is added for site plans.
Current Info Source: Survey drawings submitted with building permit process as well as drawings submitted through site plan approval.
Outstanding Issues: Need to work with the Amanda staff to provide reports to notify GIS of demolitions and additions. Used in https://www.statcan.gc.ca/en/lode/databases/odb from open data
